Lucky Tiger Moisturizing Ointment for Razor Burn

Lucky Tiger Moisturizing Ointment

Advertised as “Lucky Tiger Barber Shop Classics Ointment for Razor Bump Treatment” the label reads “It also helps reduce the redness from razor burn”.

I have found several combinations of different shaving products that can give me what I would consider a fantastic shave, pretty well as perfect as I think that I can get. That said, I enjoy trying new shaving creams and soaps, aftershaves, etc. and am working on a Razor Blade Sharpness Project compiling a chart to compare the sharpness of every DE Razor Blade that I can find.

I have rather sensitive skin and trying all these new products sometimes results in the dreaded irritation, primarily on my neck. I like to continue to try new things as I keep finding new great products, and many razor blades that I do not think I would have tried if it weren’t for the testing have turned out to be amazing.

I stumbled across the Lucky Tiger Moisturizing Ointment on one of my favorite online shaving sites. I figured I would give it a shot and see if this might be the miracle product everyone is looking for (the jar sure looks like it!).

I have good and bad news regarding my experience, if you are lucky the bad may not apply to you.

The good news is that it actually works quite well. I waited until I had a shave that disagreed with me, and for the first time was almost happy about it as it meant that I got to try out the Lucky Tiger Moisturizing Ointment.

As soon as it is applied, it is cooling and calming at the same time. It literally almost worked before my eyes, not quite, but fast. Within minutes it the irritation had noticeably decreased, and was basically gone in the morning (I put on at night).

In the jar It smells like tiger balm, which I don’t really know how to describe. It’s almost minty, menthol and eucalyptus but it does not contain any mint, menthol or eucalyptus. It’s kind of like a medicinal vapor rub scent.

The bad news, which breaks my heart, is the smell after it’s applied. There are some interesting ingredients (listed below) that maybe don’t react well with my skin. It literally stunk extremely bad and the smell would not go away. It almost smelled like some sort of burning plastic that I could not shake.

As I try many new aftershaves I frequently ask my wife to give me a quick sniff for her input. As every time in the past has been at minimum a pleasurable smell, she eagerly agreed and moved right in.

Her head snapped back and I felt almost bad as I saw the confused and disappointed look on her face, the only thing she said was “ewwwww!” Asking her again a couple days later to recap and get her take on the smell, all she said was “I don’t know, it was just gross”.

I am disappointed that a product that works for what I bought it for has such a critical side effect. Based on this one fact I obviously cannot use this product, however it is possible that it is just reacting poorly with my skin. If you use it and the smell does not sicken yourself or close ones then it would be a good product to keep around.

Ingredients: Petrolatum, Colloidal Sulphur, Fragrance (Parfum), Paraffin Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Salicylic Acid, Oxyquinoline, Yellow No. 11 (C147000).

Made in the USA.

Fine Accoutrements Snake Bite After Shaving Tonic

Fine Snake Bite After Shaving Tonic Review

Fine Accoutrements Snake Bite After Shaving Tonic is an alcohol and menthol based aftershave splash. In fact, the only other ingredient is water.

This was one of the first few aftershaves that I bought, and to be honest, I had zero intentions of actually trying it. I bought it for the bottle! It looks fantastic, an old look with amazing slogans on it: “The weak become strong, the lazy become lively, and the meek become leaders of men”. This is exactly the kind of thing that I wanted sitting on my counter in the shaving den.

I literally didn’t even try it for a month. At the time I did not understand why anyone would want an aftershave with any kick, but then the bottle started calling to me. “Contents flammable, keep away from women and children.”

It’s tough to argue with a “Guaranteed tenfold increase in vigor, bravery and pluck.” Now I still don’t even know what “pluck” is, but I was feeling vigorous and just wanting to try it was already increasing my bravery.

I was tired on the couch one day and needed to shave, and all of a sudden I thought of the Fine Snake Bite Aftershave. It was time to give it a try.

I grabbed my Edwin Jagger DE86 that already had one great shave with a Voskhod blade in it. I figured this was a prefect set up to test it out.

As I completed my head shave the anticipation was starting to creep in. I did my full after shave routine and it was time for the splash. I applied it and it felt great. A mild tingle, a cooling sensation, I was already feeling a little more awake.

I proceeded to shave my face, and I have learned over time that my head is a little tougher. It took a few different aftershaves for me to learn this so I wasn’t quite expecting the difference when I applied the Fine Snake Bite to my face.

I liberally applied the aftershave to my face. As my face started to go numb, the overpowering scent of menthol went up my nose and into my eyes. I just stood there with my eyes forced closed, breathing in the menthol. After a couple deep relaxing breaths I regained my motor functions and began to slowly open my eyes.

As the blur cleared I noticed a faint crack of a smile still on my face. As I wiped the tears from my eyes (it was the menthol, I swear) I realized that I really enjoyed this.

The scent out of the bottle is basically just alcohol, and the menthol comes out a bit as it’s applied. The light scent of menthol dissipates fairly quickly which makes it pretty neutral.

I highly recommend the Fine Accoutrements Snake Bite After Shaving Tonic. Sometimes I even use it as a splash after a shower on days I don’t shave, I just like how it feels. The Fine Snake Bite Aftershave opened up a new world for me of the intense aftershaves, and even if you don’t like it then it will still look great as a decoration.

Captain's Choice Cat O'Nine Tails Aftershave

Captain’s Choice Cat O’Nine Tails Aftershave Review

I like the feeling of intense aftershaves, whether it’s the cooling sensation of menthol or feeling “the burn” of Captain’s Choice Cat O’Nine Tails Aftershave. I’ve been on the receiving end of some interesting comments about liking these intense sensations. My favorite comment, or least favorite, is “why don’t you just shave badly?!”

Well, it’s different. Think of it like spicy food, that sensation feels good in your mouth but you wouldn’t cut your tongue up with a knife while you’re eating to feel a sting. Maybe you don’t like spicy food and that’s a bad example, but you should get my point and we’re off topic.

Trying a new product like this I like to go for a very mild shave to really isolate the specific feeling of that product. For the first run I went with an Edwin Jagger DE86 and a Voskhod blade. I also like to use something like Mitchell’s Wool Fat Shaving Soap, this is basically the baseline neutral shave for me. This way when I apply the Captain’s Choice Cat O’Nine Tails Aftershave, I know that I’m only feeling the aftershave and not the effects of another product or just a bad shave.

I shave my head as well as my face. When I first put it on my head, I was anticipating the burn. It felt pretty good, a bit of an afterburn while I was getting ready to shave my face, but not quite as much as I was expecting.

I proceeded to shave my face and then fearlessly applied the Captain’s Choice Cat O’Nine Tails Aftershave. I have found that my head is actually tougher than my face, and I started to feel the burn on my face – it was great. This is precisely what I was looking for.

The smell is great, I can pick up the bay rum style with a lot of clove. It matches what I think a Captain’s Choice theme would be perfectly. I would not want to wear this every day and have it as “my scent”, but I absolutely love working it into the rotation. It is a very warming aftershave, both the feel and the scent. It is also not overly strong and dissipates reasonably so that you can apply as liberally as you would like and continue on with your day.

I highly recommend the Captain’s Choice Cat O’Nine Tails Aftershave, I have been using it on a regular basis. I have not found any of their soaps at the places I’ve been shopping but am looking forward to snatching one up when I see it to give it a try.

Mitchell's Wool Fat Hand & Body Lotion (Moisturizer Aftershave)

Mitchell’s Wool Fat Hand & Body Lotion

After continuing to have amazing experiences using the Mitchell’s Wool Fat Shaving Soap, I was hoping they also made an aftershave. I was in search of something that compliments the amazing softness that the shaving soap provides.

Unfortunately it did not appear that MWF made an aftershave. I did see online is that some people were using the Mitchell’s Wool Fat Hand & Body Lotion after shaving, so I decided I would give it a shot.

I did not want to just use lotion as an aftershave, I like something to act as an astringent to clean my face after shaving. Without an astringent the residue of soap or cream and possible remaining stubble can clog your pores and result in razor burn, bumps or ingrown hairs. Seeing how many aftershaves contain alcohol or witch hazel, I thought Thayers Original Witch Hazel would work well.

The result of using these 3 products together is an unbelievably soft shave. Often after using just an aftershave splash that my face and head could still use some more moisture (I live in a fairly cold and dry climate most of the year). I have found myself gravitating to the Mitchell’s Wool Fat Hand & Body Lotion after most of my shaves, unless I use a balm.

Do note that as per the ingredients below, this product does contain parabens. There seems to be conflicting studies regarding the health risks related to parabens, and quite a few people now are actively making an effort to avoid parabens. From what I can tell the US FDA and Health Canada both consider parabens to be “safe as used” at the current concentrations and exposure levels, and based on how great this makes my skin feel I am going to continue to play with this fire until big brother tells me otherwise.

Also note that the main concern seems to be the link between casual use and breast cancer, so I am not sure men need to worry about using parabens on their face and head. (To confirm, I am not a Doctor and have zero education in this type of science).

Thayers Original Witch Hazel Astringent (Aloe Vera Formula)

Thayers Original Witch Hazel

One of the main ingredients in many aftershaves is witch hazel, often an alternative to higher concentrated alcohol. Witch Hazel does not pack the same punch that you get with that classic alcohol burn. I have found that if I am looking for a very neutral unscented aftershave, just using plain Thayers Original Witch Hazel as an astringent after shaving works great.

It is important to use something as an astringent after shaving, whether an aftershave splash, balm or the straight witch hazel. I have been finding that my sensitive skin feels better when I use either witch hazel or a splash after a cold rinse to get rid of any residual soap or stubble left on my face, before applying a balm or moisturizer. The witch hazel itself also leaves your skin feeling surprisingly soft. I’ve heard of some people applying with a cotton ball or pad but I just pour straight on my hands and use just like any other aftershave splash.

Thayers Witch Hazel has a very limited scent, so it works well pairing with other products. I like to use it after shaving with Mitchell’s Wool Fat Shaving Soap if I am not going for a specific smell or want to wear cologne later on. If you need a little more moisture after the witch hazel you can also use some Mitchell’s Wool Fat Hand & Body Lotion as a moisturizer.

There are many other scents that you can get from Thayers, or you can even make your own just by adding some essential oils if there is a specific scent you are after.

I highly recommend Thayers Witch Hazel.

Black Ship Grooming Co. Thomas Tew Aftershave

Black Ship Grooming Co. Thomas Tew Aftershave

I made a post on one of the shaving forums looking for some more products that give the intense sensations like cooling or burning.

Black Ship Grooming Co. Thomas Tew was mentioned that it might as well be straight alcohol, so I tracked it down!

I like the pirate look, it’s the same style of bottle as the Captains Choice and Ogallala Aftershaves. The neon color is also a nice touch which looks good on display.

It smells great, very citrusy. The claim is blood orange, lemon, amber and sandalwood. Just like the shaving soap, I pick up on the first 3 but not so much on the sandalwood. The smell is very summery and would pair well with the soap on a hot day.

I used this on my face after a close and comfortable 3 pass shave. The first trial I used an Edwin Jagger DE86 which is a very mild razor so that I could focus more on the aftershave sensation itself.

It went on well and soothed my head, not much of a burn but I’ve found my head is tougher than my face. When I put it on my face I got exactly what I was looking for: It felt like I dunked my head in a bucket of citrus vodka. It was a very pleasant, very intense sensation with the strong citrus scent. I like to close my eyes and enjoy the smell and burn at the same time.

I have sensitive skin and the Black Ship Grooming Co. Thomas Tew Aftershave felt great. One note is that it does separate a bit, I left it like that in the picture so it can be seen how there is orange at the top. Since noticing this I tend to give all my aftershave a quick little shake before I apply it now.

The price is reasonable and I look forward to using it again. I also like that while the scent is great, it is not overpowering and you don’t need to worry about it being to strong when you go out.

Geo F Trumper Sandalwood Skin Food

Geo F Trumper Sandalwood Skin Food

After a horrible experience with the Geo F Trumper Sandalwood Shaving Soap, my face needed something to help the trauma it just went through. The Geo F Trumper Sandalwood Skin Food was a nice end to an otherwise very poor shave.

The bottle looks good and comes in different sizes which is nice. The smell of this stuff is great. A very small amount was even more than I expected, you do not need to use a lot of this. A small amount goes on smooth, slick, and nourishes your face – and in my case my head too. It was definitely required after shaving with the limited protection of the Geo F Trumper Sandalwood Shaving Soap.

I have sensitive skin and the Geo F Trumper Skin Food did not give me any irritation – it helped to calm the poor experience of the shaving soap. The price is on the high end, but I would recommend this product. The only shame is that the shaving soap is so bad that I would urge you not to buy the soap. I have not tried the shaving cream, maybe it is better and would pair nicely, or there are certainly many other sandalwood soaps and creams out there.

D.R. Harris Sandalwood Aftershave

D.R. Harris Sandalwood Aftershave

I bought the D.R. Harris Sandalwood Shaving Soap, and I’m the kind of guy that likes to match an aftershave to a soap if I can. It was out of stock where I bought the soap, so I took that as a good sign that it was liked and ordered it online.

It comes in a beautiful glass bottle with a stopper, which I like. I also liked the fact that there were 3 different options for size, although I went for the smallest (100 mL) as I was not looking for quantity.

I used this on my face and head after shaving with a Voskhod blade in a Merkur 34C and getting an extremely close shave with 3 passes.

The smell is good, not what I was quite expecting compared to the soap but I liked it. While I do like the scent it was fairly strong. The comment from my wife when I asked her about the smell was “I can definitely smell you.  It’s nice… I can definitely smell you”.

My face soaked up what I put on quickly. I still wanted a little more moisture and did not want to increase the scent, but that was nothing a little Mitchell’s Wool Fat Lotion didn’t take care of. I would be careful putting on too much of this aftershave, perhaps just a light splash and then a neutral moisturizer.

I have sensitive skin and the D.R. Harris Sandalwood Aftershave did not give me any irritation. The price is on the high end, and based on the strength of the scent I thought it would be more of a small use item for smell after using something like witch hazel or neutral aftershave.

I have however found myself being drawn to it as more of a cologne, I use a very small amount on days that I don’t shave just for a bit of smell. However, as a standalone aftershave I do think the scent is a bit strong.

I would recommend this product if you are adding to your collection, but I would be careful if the intention is for it to get heavy use based on the scent strength.
