Shark Super Stainless Razor Blade Review

The Shark Super Stainless Razor Blade was recommended to me as one of the 5 blades I bought starting off, and it was the one I used for my very first shave. The first shave did not go the greatest, but it was my first time using a safety razor so I wasn’t blaming anything except myself.
- 20 tucks of 5 blades on a display card
- Super Sharp Stainless Steel blades - Retain their sharpness for many shaves
- Fits all standard safty razors - GEM, PARKER, MERKUR, JAGGER and GILLETTE
- Professional Quality
A few weeks later I tried it again, and still no luck. I was using my Edwin Jagger DE86 which is a very mild razor, and I was not able to get a very close shave like I was getting with other blades.
I was excited to try the Shark Super Stainless again for the sharpness testing since I was using a Merkur 34C. I’ve found the Merkur to be just slightly more aggressive than the Edwin Jagger, which was enough to change my thoughts on Derby Extra. I found the Derby pulled in the DE86 but was great in the 34C.
Fresh out of the pack the sharpness measured 47. For information on what this means check out Razor Blade Sharpness Testing. This is about an average reading. You can click this link to see a Razor Blade Sharpness Comparison Chart with the other blades tested so far.
I was cautiously optimistic for the first shave. Note that I shave my head as well as my face and have a pretty thick growth – except for the top of my head. This means that one of my shaves might equal two of someone that just shaves their face, or even more if they have a thinner beard.
I shave my head first and it went pretty well. It was not the closest but it felt actually pretty good. The trouble started when I got to my face. The blade seemed to be noticeably less sharp, and I battled through my third pass against the grain. I was not able to achieve a baby butt smooth shave on my face.
After the first shave, the sharpness dropped to 51. I am noticing around that 50 mark is where blades become noticeably more difficult to use.
I was actually dreading the second shave, and rightfully so. Based on the decrease in sharpness, this is not a blade I would be using if it wasn’t required to get the second set of testing values. The second shave was not great, and for the safety of my face my third pass was only partially against the grain (some of it I had to stick with across the grain for comfort). The second shave did not leave my face or head smooth.
After the second shave the sharpness measured at 56. This means that each shave lost about 10% of its sharpness, and the sharpness after the second shave was about 19% less than an already not very sharp blade.
Initial Sharpness = 47
Average Sharpness = 51
Edge Retention = 1.19
Smoothness = 1/5
Overall Subjective Rating = 1/5
Stainless Steel. Made in Egypt.
I did not enjoy the Shark Super Stainless Razor Blade for any of my shaves. It does not have the sharpness or smoothness in my opinion to even be considered a viable option in a mild or moderate safety razor.
I would not recommend this blade, especially not starting off. Perhaps it may work better in a more aggressive razor, I do have some left so I may give that a try. If anyone has had a positive experience with this blade please comment below.
