Semogue 620 Boar Shaving Brush Review
I ordered the Semogue 620 because I was really enjoying exploring face lathering and this brush is highly recommended by many for this specific purpose.
- Handle height: 44 mm
- Bristle loft: 50 mm
- Knot diameter: 22 mm
- Hand-made in Portugal
What I did not realize was the size of the brush, it is rather small. As I shave my head as well as my face, this is less than ideal. The fact that it is small is more of a fact and not a flaw as it is my own fault for not checking the product information first. One downside of ordering online is that a major physical trait you may not notice where in the store I would have noticed this immediately.
I’ve still used the Semogue 620 several times and I like it. It does work fine on my head, I just prefer a little bigger brush. You can see on the Shaving Brush Reviews banner just how small it is compared to other brushes. The other downside with the size is that you may not load up quite enough product for that third pass, but you can always just hit the puck again.
It has the right amount of back bone to face lather well. I have not tried bowl lathering with this brush but based on the size I do not think it would be very easy or effective. I do not plan to try it for this purpose when I have brushes like the Parker Deluxe Pure Badger Shaving Brush around.
The one other thing I do not like about this brush is the fact that the bristles are dyed to look like badger. I think boar hair brushes are fantastic, and by trying to imitate a badger brush Semogue seems to be stating that the boar is inferior. A good boar brush that is broken in is extremely soft on the tips and has a nice stiffness for face lathering, but it will not retain water like a badger brush will.
I do recommend this brush, specifically as a face latherer and only if you just shave your face. The price is great and the quality seems right up there. If you are looking for a shaving brush for both bowl lather and face lather I would keep looking.
