Rapira Swedish Supersteel Razor Blade Review

Rapira Swedish Supersteel Razor Blade Review

I have had very good luck in the past with Rapira DE razor blades, and with Russian razor blades in general for that matter. I’m always at least a little excited to try a new razor blade, but I was really looking forward to the Rapira Swedish Supersteel.

Fresh out of the pack the sharpness measured 47, which is getting to be on the less sharp end of average. For information on what this means check out Razor Blade Sharpness Testing. You can click this link to see a Razor Blade Sharpness Comparison Chart with the other blades tested so far.

Most of the blades so far have had the average of 44-46 out of the package, so 47 is pretty close. Remember that a higher number is less sharp.

The first shave with the Rapira Swedish Supersteel razor blade was ok. It did not feel very sharp, but not dull either. I did notice a little bit more resistance when compared to some of the really sharp blades like the BIC Chrome Platinum, but it certainly did its job.

Note that I shave my head as well as my face and have a pretty thick growth – except for the top of my head. This means that one of my shaves might equal two of someone that just shaves their face, or even more if they have a thinner beard.

After the first shave, the sharpness decreased to 48. You will notice in the other razor blade reviews as well that most blades so far tend to sharpen up with use as the coating wears away or the blade gets honed. While 48 is technically a decrease, I would say in this case for all intents and purposes it is the same as the initial reading of 47.

The second shave was basically the same as the first. I enjoyed the second shave more than the first shave, and I think it was mainly because my expectations were lowered a bit. I personally like a blade on the sharper end, and seeing the Russian made Rapira name I was somewhat expecting something a little sharper.

I do my best to be impartial and unbiased when testing a blade, but of course my human instinct will kick in and I will have some preconceived notions when grabbing a new blade. That is where the sharpness testing comes in, at the end of the day I give objective numbers for you to compare and decide for yourself.

After the second shave the sharpness increased just slightly to 47, which again is basically the same as 48. I will say the Rapira Swedish Supersteel was impressively consistent, maintaining the same level of sharpness out of the package and through two full head and face shaves. Not everyone likes or wants a very sharp blade.

Overall I cannot really complain as i got two full head and face shaves with no irritation using the Rapira Swedish Supersteel razor blade. While I do not plan to purchase any bulk quantities of this blade, I would certainly use it again if I had limited options and it was available.

To speculate a little further, it may be great for anyone that has softer whiskers than me, and it also may be great in a more aggressive razor than the Merkur 34C. I would still recommend giving this blade a try to see how it works for you.
