Gillette 7 O’Clock Permasharp Stainless Razor Blade Review

Gillette 7 O’Clock Permasharp Stainless Razor Blade Review

The Gillette 7 O’clock series is made up of 4 different blades, and just to keep it confusing there are 2 that come in a green package. The Yellow packaging is the SharpEdge and the black packaging is the Super Platinum. This review will focus on the Gillette 7 O’clock Permasharp Stainless Razor Blade, with the other green package being the Super Stainless.

I’ve been really impressed with the Gillette blades so far, and specifically the 7 O’clock series. I still have quite a few Gillette blades to go and will continue to review blades in the order they are voted. (Click here to vote for the next blade to test)

Fresh out of the pack the sharpness measured 45. For information on what this means check out Razor Blade Sharpness Testing. This is right about average, and really close to rest of the 7 O’clock series, with the other green also (45), yellow (46) and black (45). I found it quite interesting that all 4 blades were within 1, and that 3 of them measured the same at 45.

As an avid DE shaver I also found the back of the package quite amusing suggesting the use of Gillette Series Shave Gel.

To be honest I have not used a gel in an aerosol can since I started using a safety razor, and I did not do it this time for 2 reasons.

First, I need to keep these tests consistent and if I had an amazing shave using a shave gel then I wouldn’t know if it was the blade or the gel.

Second, it goes against everything I now stand for as I enjoy using a brush and making a nice lather. It turns out the Super Platinum (black package) also has this recommendation that I did not seem to notice during that review. This really has nothing to do with the review itself so I will get back on topic.

The first shave with the Gillette 7 O’clock Permasharp Stainless was good. It was reasonably close, smooth, and I really had no complaints.

Note that I shave my head as well as my face and have a pretty thick growth – except for the top of my head. This means that one of my shaves might equal two of someone that just shaves their face, or even more if they have a thinner beard.

After the first shave, the sharpness increased to 35. You will notice in the other razor blade reviews as well that most blades so far tend to sharpen up with use. This, in my opinion, is quite a large change in sharpness that I personally find to be undesirable.

I prefer consistency and this is a wide spread. Further, the raw data had a very large range (from 26 to 58), and looking at the blade edge I could see just how inconsistent it looked. Unfortunately I do not have the gear to share a good picture of this, but the readings speak for themselves.

The second shave was not that great, and I would say the least impressive of the Gillette 7 O’clock series shaves. The shave itself was ok, but as I was putting on aftershave a began to notice it was not overly close and definitely not one of the best shaves I’ve had. That said, I did not get any irritation and any shave that is irritation free I am happy with overall.

After the second shave the sharpness decreased to 42. The range here did seem to tighten up, but as it was losing sharpness and smoothness and I know that I would not want to use this blade for a third time. Realistically I would not even want to use this blade for the second shave again, it was really just “okay”.

Initial Sharpness = 45
Average Sharpness = 41
Edge Retention = 0.93
Smoothness = 3/5

Overall Subjective Rating = 3/5

I found the Gillette 7 O’clock Permasharp Stainless (green package) to be fairly mediocre. I personally found it to be the least impressive in the Gillette 7 O’clock series, and not up to par with many of the other blades that I’ve tried so far. Maybe I should have used the shave gel.

I still think that every shaver should try every blade, and I’m just here to give you the data on sharpness. Give it a try and leave a comment what you think, I am sure this is someone’s favorite blade.
